How to Fix Folders that Keeps Reverting to Read-Only in Windows 11

When a folder in Windows is set to read-only, all of the files contained therein are often also set to read-only. Windows does, however, allow you to make anything readable and writeable. However, it is annoying when the folder repeatedly appears in read-only status. This means that while you can access it, you cannot edit it or add new files.

If you share your computer, it makes sense that your first concern would be if it was made by someone else. However, this issue could arise for a number of reasons. A list of helpful troubleshooting advice has been put together by us.

1. Use Administrator Account

One of the most frequent causes of not being able to update a folder's read-only attribute is improper permissions. You are powerless if the folder you are attempting to change was made using an administrator account.
If so, just log in using an administrator account and modify the folder's properties to change the read-only property.

2. Change Permissions For  The Drive

Change the permissions for the drive containing the folder if the issue still exists after using an administrator account. This is the procedure.

Step 1:

To launch File Explorer and navigate to This PC, press Windows key + E.

Step 2:

Click Properties from the context menu of the right-clicked drive where the folder is located.

Step 3:

Click the Advanced button on the Security tab after navigating there.

Step 4:

Select Change Permissions from the menu.

Step 5:
When the User Account Control (UAC) prompt displays, choose Yes.

Step 6:

Click Edit after choosing your user account.

Step 7:

Choose "This folder, subfolders, and files" from the drop-down menu next to "Applies to" to make the selection.

Step 8:

Check the Full control box under Basic permissions. Next, select OK.

You can easily update the folder attribute after completing the aforementioned steps. To maintain uniformity of rights across all objects, you must select the inheritance option if the system has several user accounts.

Step 1:
Launch File Explorer once more and go to the Users folder

Step 2:

Find the folder containing your username. When you right-click on it, choose Properties.

Step 3:

Click on Advanced under the Security tab.

Step 4:

After selecting the Enable inheritance button, press Apply.
